An encounter with Bobby Balingit of The Wuds, October 9 (multiply post/photo, Oct 21, '08 5:21 PM)

I came to Mag:Net Katipunan in search of Markushighway. Marcus posted in his multiply about his artworks. Traveling via MRT and LRT is a big hassle, especially if the show is past 9pm and from work, too. But when the show had started, it was a relief to see the bands play and hearing your favorite songs.

I went alone in Mag:net and someone recognized me as having responded to Marcus's post. Her name was Che-che Pido. She approached me asking: "Sa multiply ka rin ba ni Marcus?" I replied in the affirmative. I had just ordered my coffee (which is the thing I loved the most in Mag:net). She offered her table with me. She's along with a former officemate, Jonjon. They are having a good time from their places up north of Metro Manila.

"Kahit malayo, narito kayo. Astig," I said.

The night was only starting in Mag:net when a tall guy arrived. He has graying hair and clad in a brown leather jacket. He sat behind my back and unwrapped a few CDs which are for sale during the show. He has only less than ten copies and luckily those who knew him bought the CDs right away.

I said to Cheche, "Si Bobby Balingit ng The Wuds." She replied, "Hindi ko pa siya kilala."

"Sila 'yung umawit ng 'Inosente lang ang Nagtataka'. Akala ng mga bata, Rivermaya ang original niyon."

I asked Bobby how much is the CD and I got the last one for the night. The CD is entitled Juan Isip, his solo effort. Handing him a pen, he obliged to sign my copy. And I asked him about albums of the Wuds. "Nireremix sa US 'yung master tapes," he said.

"Sana makakuha ako ng mga kopya. Tapes 'yung mayroon ako."

"Old school ka rin pala"

"The Wuds iyan, e."

He smiled.

The Purplechickens and Markushighway had finished their sets when the Wuds went onstage. They sang songs which are not the ones I heard of in their live sets. I immediately loved "Ti Recordi, Joe?" when they played it that night. The song is in the CD.

Their last song was "Inosente Lang ang Nagtataka" which brought the house down. I really want to do the punk dance in front but only me want to do it. (Darn!) It was a powerful performance! When the song ended and the cymbals crashed the last notes, I shouted for another song.

I think Bobby and the band heard it and he strummed the Am-F-G-- pattern. It was haunting for the delay pedal is on. And his voice followed: "Dito ba sa mundo ano'ng tunay na kailangan..." I was ecstatic at that moment!

Hearing the refrain blew me. "Maraming nagpapanggap na makabayan/ Gamit ang salitang kalayaan/... Ano ba'ng gusto mo na magpapasaya sa iyo/... Pero nakalimutan ang Diyos!"

Yeah, Rock en Roll, Bobby Balingit!
