The Torchbearer*
Louise Vincent B. Amante
Your vision
is also our own.
Before the straight path
was spoken of, you walked on it;
embodied it even –
not as your own –
with us in your mind and heart.
Nobody could ever pull you
from treading on that path.
It is because you set foot there
and on that road
you are holding that torch.
Your grip is tight,
securely holding it to light
the cauldron
of our dreams.
You are not Prometheus,
many times you have declared this to us.
I am just a servant.
What a lowly servant you are!
Leaving a trail of footsteps
in our hearts.
But, Torchbearer,
you haven’t reached the cauldron.
Lay now in peace,
Torchbearer.
The flame you bring
ignited us to believe again
in our dreams.
